Home grown and ready to unleash the heat - Paula Doherty is primed ready for her debut with the Brisbane Bandits. The Australian Women's Baseball Showcase is one of the highest levels you can play for in Australia outside of the national team, and Paula is eager to show her stuff when her team take on the rest of the best come 9 May 2024.
Paula is a familiar face around the Baseball Association of Townsville, making her early mark on the baseball diamond in the little league competitions. It was clear from early on that baseball would be an important part of her life.
When she wasn't at school, practicing music, or helping out her family, Paula looked for every opportunity she could to pick up a baseball. It was love at first sight - or pitch - in this case.
Donned by her coaches as one of the most memorable young players to come through Townsville baseball, growing up playing against the boys was never a deterrent. It was here that she discovered and developed her love for pitching.
"The love of the game that she showed from day one was infectious and to see where she is now is a testament to her hard work." reflects one of her first coaches.
Pitching has always been a favourite position on the diamond for Paula, grateful for all the coaches who have helped over the years.
"I love being involved in every moment of the game. Every play starts with the moment you throw the ball." she says.
It wasn't long before she fast tracked through to seniors. Dragging her mum out to play with her in her first season of seniors. Every spare moment was spent at the park putting in the extra reps. Before too long she was holding her own as a pitcher in both the B grade and A grade local comps.
With a dream to push her baseball career as far as she can, Paula now plays down in Melbourne as part of the Newport Rams Baseball Club with fellow Bandit and Taipans life member Shiori Hoshino. Taking every opportunity that has come her way, Paula has grabbed her baseball career with both hands making it her own and we love watching her go from strength to strength.
